Our Character Development Programme is the foundation stone of Xinmin’s school curriculum. Students learn from stories and poems at morning assemblies, reflect during weekly 1 hr periods, act on their values in the co-curricular programme, self assess how far they have developed using Xinmin’s validated Character Development rubric and discuss 1-to-1 with their teachers. The programme also nurtures students to become socially responsible citizens. Through the co-curricular activities (CCA) and class platforms, our students learn empathy and give back to society as they care for the community, Singapore and the environment in actions. Our exceptionally strong Co-curricular Programme actively builds character, leadership qualities and a healthy lifestyle through students’ pursuit of their passion in sports and games, the performing arts, science innovation, outdoor adventure and multi-media. Student-run, teacher-guided, assisted by alumni, coaches and instructors, many of our groups win national awards. We believe every student who gains admission to Xinmin can be a leader. The Student Leadership Development Programme provides skills and opportunities through our self-designed leadership curriculum for various levels of leadership. All students will have at least one leadership role ranging from project team leaders, class leaders to CCA and Student Leaders. The Habits of Mind Programme coupled with Project Work enables students to become skilful thinkers, creative and innovative problem solvers by equipping students with useful skills and the right mindset. This will prepare our students very well for a constantly changing future where they face open-ended, unfamiliar problems and complex situations. The Aesthetics Programme encourages all students to appreciate the arts and provides them with another avenue for self expression. Students with talent can hone their abilities through our award-winning Chinese Opera, Guzheng, Chinese Dance, Symphonic Band, Choir and Drama groups. Our unique Bicultural Exchange and Twinning Programme gives all students a global awareness beyond the classroom. They have opportunities to interact closely with friends from top schools in New Delhi (India), Japan, Malaysia, Hong Kong SAR, Shanghai and Beijing (China). Through hosting these friends in class and at home, our students become more mature. They appreciate and love Singapore more. The return homestay overseas helps them understand the other country’s progress, history and culture. Students use Information Communications Technology (ICT) to learn. Within the Mother Tongue Language and English Language curricula, students master their languages through authentic tasks such as story boarding, scripting, producing and recording news and other video clips in our Media Factory. All students are trained in 3D-modelling and 4D Animation software to create digital models and animation clips for ICT, Design and Technology, Art projects and to visualize scientific concepts. Learning takes place anytime, anywhere, on our e-learning portal. Our Biomedical Life Science Research Programme supported by our state-of-the-art Biomedical Laboratory, interests students in Science through modules like Forensic Science and Perfume Extraction. They get to handle equipment and run experiments normally done at university level. Exciting projects such as Orchid Hybridisation has led to the successful cultivation of several new orchid species, tissue culture and gene modification research. Xinmin nurtures each student to discover their passions and develop their talents (cognitive, aesthetics, physical and/or leadership) through theTalent Development Programme. With career exposure, guidance and counseling, students develop their career and life plans based on their strengths and preferences. This places them on a sure footing to lead a healthy and meaningful life.
